TRELL

Helvete Magazine har dykket litt ned i sitt gamle arkiv for å hente frem noen band vi ikke tidligere har presentert for våre lesere, men som i det siste ser ut til å ha fått litt vind i seilene igjen.

Tidligere spilte Trell en god del rocka coverlåter, noe som bidro til høy partyfaktor og god stemning. Etter litt nærmere gjennomsøk ser vi derimot at bandet nå også har flere egne låter, som vi selvfølgelig har sjekket ut. Vi føler kanskje at norsk rock hadde sin aller sterkeste periode på 80- og 90-tallet, men Trell hører absolutt hjemme under sjangeren norsk rock og våre lesere har satt opp en standard liste med spørsmål de ønsker at vi bruker når vi presenterer band vi ikke har tatt for oss tidligere. Dette er derfor basert på hva leserne selv ønsker å vite om mer ukjente band, så da er det bare å hoppe rett i det…

Vi har tatt en prat med Kai, vokalist i Trell, som vi faktisk har kjent lenge før Helvete Magazine så dagens lys.

Hvem startet bandet, hvor og når? – Bandet ble startet av meg, Kai Shakesby og Espen Saga i Oslo/Fetsund-området tidlig på 2000-tallet, med røtter tilbake til midten av 90-tallet.

Hvem spiller i bandet nå, og hva er deres roller og hvilken bakgrunn har bandmedlemmene fra tidligere prosjekter? – Vi har alle en lang fartstid fra den norske livescenen. Medlemmene har gjennom årene vært involvert i ulike bandprosjekter og har lang erfaring som aktive musikere, både med eget materiale og som et ettertraktet live-/coverband. I dag består bandet av meg, Kai Shakesby, Espen Saga, Casa Leven, Nicolai Ryen Christiansen og Pål Magnus Nordby og her får vi en kort pressentasjon om hva de har holdt på med forutenom Trell.

Hvem har inspirert dere? – Inspirasjonen vår er bred, men vi henter mye av energien og uttrykket vårt fra musikkscenen på 80- og 90-tallet, blandet med våre egne moderne referanser. Et gjennomgående ønske er at musikken skal ha et stort lydbilde, og vi er ikke redde for at det til tider skal låte litt overprodusert.

Hvorfor dette navnet, og hva betyr det? – Navnet «Trell» har vært med oss helt siden starten på 90-tallet. Vi ønsket et navn som reflekterte at musikken vår er norsk-språklig.

Hvor mange album har dere gitt ut? – Vi ga ut EP-en På ville veier i 2007 som ble spilt inn i Firehouse Studio i Halden med Trond Holter fra Wig Wam som produsent, noe som ble et viktig startskudd for bandets videre utvikling og sound. I løpet av 2024 og 2025 har vi sluppet 9. singler, som «Dødens dåp», «Labyrint» og «Måneskinn», og vi jobber aktivt med nytt materiale for utgivelse i nær fremtid.

Har dere spilt med noen kjente band, og i så fall hvilke og hvor? – Vi har vært heldige og spilt på mange scener over hele Norge. Vi har blant annet hatt gleden av å varme opp for internasjonale artister som Nazareth og Samantha Fox.

Hva er bandets planer for fremtiden? – Vi har nylig gjennomført to konserter på Østlandet hvor vi har lagt mye arbeid i lyd og produksjon for å sikre at live-opplevelsen sitter som den skal. Nå er vi klare for å ta steget videre. Vi jobber aktivt med arrangører over hele landet for å sette opp en turné i 2027, slik at vi endelig kan reise rundt og spre norsk rock til hele det norske folk.

Har dere noen ord å si til Helvete Magazine og våre lesere sånn på tampen?
Målet vårt er å bli Norges største norske rockeband. Det høres kanskje arrogant ut, men noen må jo faktisk tørre å si det også. Akkurat nå føles det som om alle norske rockeband enten skal låte punk, black metal eller som det samme indiebandet om og om igjen. Det virker nesten som folk har glemt det 80-tallet skjønte så godt: at musikk gjerne kan være stor, pompøs og full av selvtillit. For oss handler det ikke om «less is more». For oss er more is more. Vi vil ha store refrenger, et stort lydbilde og låter som faktisk tør å ta plass. Så da håper vi at både Helvete Magazine og deres lesere der ute vil følge med oss på reisen videre.

Helvete Magazine ha buceado un poco en su antiguo archivo para rescatar algunas bandas que aún no habíamos presentado a nuestros lectores, pero que últimamente parecen haber vuelto a estar un poco en el punto de mira.

Anteriormente, Trell tocaba bastantes versiones rockeras, algo que contribuía a un alto factor de fiesta y muy buen ambiente. Sin embargo, tras investigar un poco más, vemos que la banda ahora también cuenta con varias canciones propias, que por supuesto hemos escuchado. Quizás sentimos que el rock noruego tuvo su época más fuerte durante los años 80 y 90, pero Trell encaja absolutamente dentro del género rock noruego, y nuestros lectores han elaborado una lista estándar de preguntas que desean que utilicemos cuando presentamos bandas que no hemos tratado anteriormente. Por lo tanto, esto se basa en lo que los propios lectores quieren saber sobre bandas menos conocidas, así que vamos directamente al grano…

Hemos hablado con Kai, vocalista de Trell, a quien en realidad conocemos desde mucho antes de que Helvete Magazine viera la luz.

¿Quién fundó la banda, dónde y cuándo?
La banda fue fundada por Kai Shakesby y Espen Saga en la zona de Oslo/Fetsund a principios de los años 2000, con raíces que se remontan a mediados de los 90.

¿Quién toca actualmente en la banda, cuáles son sus roles y qué trayectoria tienen los miembros en proyectos anteriores? – Todos tenemos una larga trayectoria en la escena en vivo noruega. A lo largo de los años, los miembros han estado involucrados en diferentes proyectos musicales y cuentan con una amplia experiencia como músicos activos, tanto con material propio como en una solicitada banda de directo/covers.

Hoy la banda está formada por mí, Kai Shakesby, en la voz, quien comenzó su viaje musical dentro del death metal como bajista en la banda Exhumed, antes de continuar su camino con la banda de grunge Drain. Ya a principios de los años 90 fundó Trell por primera vez, pero el proyecto tuvo una vida corta y quedó en pausa después de solo unos meses. En 2001, la banda volvió a la vida — esta vez con una base y una dirección mucho más claras.

Espen Saga, en la guitarra, ha tocado a lo largo de los años en bandas como Domi, Saint n Sinners y Pub Floyd, además de haber trabajado con varias bandas de eventos y proyectos en vivo. Hoy también es el hombre detrás de los mandos en Trell, donde actúa como productor, compositor y fuerza creativa.

Casa Leven, en el bajo, también formó parte de la primera banda que empezó a moverse en los años 90, concretamente la «legendaria» banda Avgass de Nittedal, junto a su paisano Jarle Bernhoft. Desde los años 2000 formó parte de Bastard Fist y Decibel State, con diversos conciertos en el este de Noruega. También fundó Styrepils, una banda de eventos, en 2013, que sigue activa hasta hoy.

Nico Ryen, en la batería, es conocido por bandas como Mudslide, Trendkiller, Desertör y Oceans of Time. Además, fue contratado por Red Harvest para una actuación en Tons of Rock, donde tuvo 14 días para aprenderse las canciones + un ensayo en Fredrikstad antes de que todo estallara en la fortaleza de Halden en 2016.

Pål Magnus, en los teclados, tiene una formación musical versátil y ha tocado en orquestas, bandas de viento, big bands, rock y pop, siendo el grupo de visepop Krumspring (1992–1997) y la banda The Marble Kings (2000–2007) sus proyectos más destacados.

¿Quién os ha inspirado? – Nuestra inspiración es amplia, pero tomamos mucha de nuestra energía y expresión de la escena musical de los años 80 y 90, mezclada con nuestras propias referencias modernas. Un deseo constante es que la música tenga un sonido grande, y no tenemos miedo de que a veces suene un poco sobreproducida.

¿Por qué este nombre y qué significa? – El nombre «Trell» nos ha acompañado desde el comienzo en los años 90. Queríamos un nombre que reflejara que nuestra música está en noruego.

¿Cuántos álbumes habéis publicado? – Publicamos el EP På ville veier en 2007, que fue grabado en Firehouse Studio en Halden con Trond Holter de Wig Wam como productor, algo que se convirtió en un importante punto de partida para el desarrollo y el sonido posterior de la banda. Durante 2024 y 2025 hemos lanzado 9 sencillos, como «Dødens dåp», «Labyrint» y «Måneskinn», y estamos trabajando activamente en nuevo material para su publicación en un futuro cercano.

¿Habéis tocado con algunas bandas conocidas? En ese caso, ¿cuáles y dónde? – Hemos tenido la suerte de tocar en muchos escenarios por toda Noruega. Entre otras cosas, hemos tenido el placer de calentar motores para artistas internacionales como Nazareth y Samantha Fox.

¿Cuáles son los planes de la banda para el futuro? – Recientemente hemos realizado dos conciertos en el este de Noruega, donde hemos trabajado mucho en el sonido y la producción para asegurarnos de que la experiencia en vivo funcione como debe. Ahora estamos listos para dar el siguiente paso. Estamos trabajando activamente con promotores de todo el país para preparar una gira en 2027, para que por fin podamos viajar y llevar el rock noruego a todo el pueblo noruego.

¿Tenéis algunas palabras para Helvete Magazine y nuestros lectores, ya para terminar?
Nuestro objetivo es convertirnos en la banda de rock noruego más grande de Noruega. Tal vez suene arrogante, pero alguien tiene que atreverse a decirlo también. Ahora mismo parece como si todas las bandas de rock noruegas tuvieran que sonar a punk, black metal o al mismo grupo indie una y otra vez. Casi parece que la gente ha olvidado lo que los años 80 entendieron tan bien: que la música perfectamente puede ser grande, pomposa y llena de confianza. Para nosotros no se trata de «less is more». Para nosotros, more is more. Queremos grandes estribillos, un sonido grande y canciones que realmente se atrevan a ocupar espacio. Así que esperamos que tanto Helvete Magazine como vuestros lectores ahí fuera nos sigan en nuestro viaje hacia adelante.

Helvete Magazine has taken a little dive into its old archive to bring forward some bands we have not previously presented to our readers, but who lately seem to have caught a bit of wind in their sails again.

Previously, Trell played quite a few rocking cover songs, something that contributed to a high party factor and a great atmosphere. After looking a little closer, however, we see that the band now also has several songs of their own, which we have of course checked out. We may feel that Norwegian rock had its strongest period during the 80s and 90s, but Trell absolutely belongs within the Norwegian rock genre, and our readers have put together a standard list of questions they want us to use when presenting bands we have not covered before. This is therefore based on what the readers themselves want to know about lesser-known bands, so let us jump straight into it…

We have had a chat with Kai, vocalist in Trell, whom we have actually known since long before Helvete Magazine saw the light of day.

Who started the band, where and when? – The band was started by Kai Shakesby and Espen Saga in the Oslo/Fetsund area in the early 2000s, with roots going back to the mid-90s.

Who plays in the band now, what are their roles, and what background do the band members have from previous projects? – We all have long experience from the Norwegian live scene. Over the years, the members have been involved in various band projects and have extensive experience as active musicians, both with original material and as a sought-after live/cover band.

Today, the band consists of me, Kai Shakesby on vocals, who started his musical journey within death metal as the bassist in the band Exhumed, before moving on to the grunge band Drain. Already in the early 90s, he founded Trell for the first time, but the project had a short lifespan and was put on ice after only a few months. In 2001, the band was brought back to life — this time with a much clearer foundation and direction.

Espen Saga on guitar has, over the years, played in bands such as Domi, Saint n Sinners and Pub Floyd, in addition to working with a number of event bands and live projects. Today, he is also the man behind the controls in Trell, where he serves as producer, songwriter and creative driving force.

Casa Leven on bass was also part of the first band that started making moves in the 90s, namely the “legendary” band Avgass from Nittedal, together with fellow local Jarle Bernhoft. From the 2000s, he was part of Bastard Fist and Decibel State, with various concerts around Eastern Norway. He also started Styrepils, an event band, in 2013, which is still active.

Nico Ryen on drums is known from bands such as Mudslide, Trendkiller, Desertör and Oceans of Time. In addition, he was hired by Red Harvest for a performance at Tons of Rock, where he had 14 days to learn the songs + one rehearsal in Fredrikstad before it all kicked off at Halden Fortress in 2016.

Pål Magnus on keyboards has a versatile musical background and has played in orchestras, brass bands, big bands, rock and pop, with the visepop group Krumspring (1992–1997) and the band The Marble Kings (2000–2007) being his most profiled projects.

Who has inspired you? – Our inspiration is broad, but we draw much of our energy and expression from the music scene of the 80s and 90s, mixed with our own modern references. A recurring wish is for the music to have a big sound, and we are not afraid of it sounding a little overproduced at times.

Why this name, and what does it mean? – The name “Trell” has been with us since the beginning in the 90s. We wanted a name that reflected the fact that our music is in Norwegian.

How many albums have you released? – We released the EP På ville veier in 2007, which was recorded at Firehouse Studio in Halden with Trond Holter from Wig Wam as producer, something that became an important starting point for the band’s further development and sound. During 2024 and 2025, we have released 9 singles, such as “Dødens dåp”, “Labyrint” and “Måneskinn”, and we are actively working on new material for release in the near future.

Have you played with any well-known bands, and if so, which ones and where? – We have been lucky enough to play on many stages all over Norway. Among other things, we have had the pleasure of warming up for international artists such as Nazareth and Samantha Fox.

What are the band’s plans for the future? – We have recently completed two concerts in Eastern Norway, where we put a lot of work into sound and production to make sure the live experience sits exactly as it should. Now we are ready to take the next step. We are actively working with promoters all over the country to set up a tour in 2027, so that we can finally travel around and spread Norwegian rock to the entire Norwegian people.

Do you have any final words for Helvete Magazine and our readers?
Our goal is to become Norway’s biggest Norwegian rock band. That may sound arrogant, but someone actually has to dare to say it too. Right now, it feels as if every Norwegian rock band has to sound like punk, black metal or the same indie band over and over again. It almost seems like people have forgotten what the 80s understood so well: that music is allowed to be big, pompous and full of confidence. For us, it is not about “less is more”. For us, more is more. We want big choruses, a big sound and songs that actually dare to take up space. So we hope that both Helvete Magazine and your readers out there will follow us on our journey forward.
